The guys who keep Lusaka running

Bike shacks dot the city. Hidden in these humble corrugated-metal or wood structures are some of the most capable, inventive mechanics I have seen anywhere. When I moved to Lusaka, I bought a bike from these guys which was thrown together from different pieces of three or four bikes, from various years and countries of manufacture. That bike has been about as tough as they come, and when the rare problem has cropped up (no doubt because I put it through the kind of roads that no bike shoud ever experience), I've had no trouble finding someone to expertly fix it with nothing more than a wrench for almost no money. These are the guys that keep the city moving, day in, day out. MH
